Introduction Fireplace Life Funeral Rituals

Fireplace Life

In the protostoric houses found in Borgo S. Zeno, the domestic life rotated around the fireplace, located on the floor in the middle of the kitchen. The sides of the fireplace, the oven, and the pottery were central to everyday's cooking and dining. The fireplace's side stones were rectangfular or shaped as a trapeze with various decorations engraved on them.

Rings made of stone were used as ovens to hold pots during cooking. To cook and keep the food warm, the stone rings were filled with burning coals. The pottery came in various forms and dates around the XI and VIII century b.C. (around the end of the bronze age and at the beginning of the iron's age). The most common findings are made of regular ground, while ceramic potsa re more rare and usually included cups and bowls. Among the pots made of the less refined material there are big pots, big bowls and large cups, including an exceptionally large vase with two handles.
